Name: Kuranda Rainforest Walking Trails
City, State: Queensland Australia
What's it like?
Kuranda's rainforests in Tropical North Queensland are often
seen from the window of the famous scenic railway, or silently soared over in
the Skyrail cableway, but thanks to the Queensland
Heritage Trails Network, a series of new walking trails will help visitors
get in amongst them with ease.
Walks ranging in length from 600m to 7km, the trails are linked to allow visitors to explore in and around the picturesque village of Kuranda, which is nestled in World Heritage-listed rainforest on the banks of the Barron River.
Each walk provides a different experience, from a stroll along the shady banks of Jumrum Creek to a longer 7km hike to the spectacular Barron Falls Lookout. The shortest 600m walk showcases Kuranda's main street or you can discover "behind the scenes" on the Backstreets Walk.
One of the most popular options, according to the Kuranda Visitor Information Centre, is to combine parts of three trails (Jumrum Creek, Jungle Walks and River Walk) for a one hour circuit walk, which ends up back at the railway station.
The Kuranda trails are part of a dozen Tropical North Queensland walking trails which opened in 2002 as part of the Queensland Heritage Trails Network. All walks are well-sign posted.
The Kuranda Rainforest Walking Trails are:
- The 1.5km Jumrum Creek Walk takes walkers on a sensory journey through
cool rainforest along a grade trail and boardwalk, down to the gurgling Jumrum
Creek. The walk meanders through the Jumrum Creek Environmental Reserve on the
edge of Kuranda.
- The 600m Village Walk showcases Kuranda's main street and finishes
at the site of the original Kuranda markets.
- The 1.6km River Walk is a pleasant riverside stroll along a tree-shaded
esplanade.
- The 7km Barron Falls Road Walk follows a 'green tunnel' along Barron
Falls Road finishing at Barron Falls lookout, one of the most spectacular views
in Tropical North Queensland.
- The 1.6km Jungle Walk to the Barron River passes through a regenerating
forest, showing how quickly rainforest re-establishes in a cleared area.
- The 1.2km Kuranda Backstreets Walk gives walkers an insight into how
Kuranda lives behind the main street from the Djabugay to the families of pioneer
settlers and more recent arrivals.
