KERIKERI
Calling Code: +64 9
Kerikeri is near the Kororipo pa site, which was
home to the fearsome Maori chief Hongi Hika, who terrorized many
tribes throughout the North Island in the early 1800s. Assured
by Hongi that they would be welcome, the early missionaries decided
to make the Kerikeri Basin the site of their second mission station.
Now a modern bustling town with a regional airport, the area is
well known for its arts and crafts trail, quality shopping and
numerous cafes and restaurants. The two oldest surviving buildings
in NZ, Kemp House and the Stone Store - built in 1822 - are both
in Kerikeri.
Explore the Historic Mission Station, established in 1819 or walk
amongst kauri at Puketi Forest and taste the local wine. Kororipo
Pa and Rainbow Falls are nearby, and there is a reconstructed
Maori village. The rich, fertile soil and the mild climate ensue
a lush oasis for horticultural produce.
