Review of Karikari Peninsula New Zealand KARIKARI PENINSULA
Calling Code: +64 9

The Karikari Peninsula forms the western and northern edges of Doubtless Bay in the Far North as it reaches out into the Pacific. The turnoff from State Highway 10 is a four hour drive from Auckland and just 20 minutes from Kaitaia. Those who love endless stretches of white sand, perfect bays and crystal clear seas will willingly make the trek.

The beaches up here are sublime. Tokerau for example, curves up along Doubtless Bay for 18km, all the way from Aurere to Whatuwhiwhi. You can reach this golden strop by turning right off the peninsula road just past Lake Ohia or at Tokerau Beach, a small settlement with a camping ground.

Across this dog-legged peninsula and forming its long northern side is Karikari Bay, another seemingly endless sweep of pure white sand and a superb fishing spot. It's reached from Matai Bay or by heading towards Rangiputa, a picturesque settlement at the mouth of the Rangaunu Harbour with its own great beach. Towards the bottom of Karikari Bay is the immaculate Puheke beach. And then there's Matai Bay, actually two beautiful, sheltered semi-circular bays with a small headland between them. One of the bays has a boat ramp and there's also a delightful DOC camping ground.
