Review of Karamea New Zealand KARAMEA
Calling Code: +64 3

The first main town on the coast, Karamea contains pleasant walks, interesting caves and the bountiful Oparara River, one of the better trout fishing spots in the South Island.

Walk along the wonderful Fernian Track or, try the more challenging hike up Mt Stormy. Behind Karamea is a massive wall of wild bush and imposing mountain ranges which cover the entire northwest corner of the South Island. This delightfully rugged patch of New Zealand can be traversed on the Heaphy Track, a five day walk which takes you past some beautiful beaches, forests and rivers.

The Honeycomb Caves house the remains of the giant but now extinct moa bird. Nearby is the mighty Oparara River, a great place to cool off after a long day of walking.
