KANGAROO ISLAND
Calling Code: +61
An Australian academic spent 17 years painstakingly visiting and cataloguing the country's 11,000-odd
beaches to find Australia's best - not a simple task given the almighty abundance of
great strips on that country's 25,750km of coastline.
What Professor Andrew Short came up with delighted the people of Kangaroo Island, a 45-minute ferry ride of South Australia's
Fleurieu Peninsula. Prof Short found his ideal beach on the windswept southern coast of Vivonne Bay. Mild currents, consistent surf, safe
swimming and a lack of development, plus the kind of natural beauty for which Kangaroo Island is famous, helped the beach reach its winning
score.
The bay looks out on turquoise sea and there's excellent fishing from the jetty, beach, boat or the Harriet River mouth. A picnic
area with barbecue, camping and toilets are also handy. you can swim safely near the jetty and boat ramp, or in the sandy-bottomed
river. On the other side of the river Point Ellen allows spectacular views of the Southern Ocean crashing on to the cliffs. Vivonne Bay
is the only safe harbour on the south coast of the island and from November to May it's the base for the crayfishing fleet.
For scenic splendor, great beaches and the chance to get close to penguins, seals, koalas, kangaroos, goannas and other wildlife, Kangaroo
Island is hard to beat. Catch the ferry (four times daily) from Cape Jervis or take a plane (30min) from
Adelaide airport.
