HUAHINE
Calling Code: +689
One of the most picturesque and geographically diverse islands in
the society group, Huahine has deep cleft bays, rugged mountains and long white-sand
beaches.
Huahine is actually two islands - Huahine Iti and Huahine Nui. They are part of
the same land mass and are connected by an underwater isthmus. The islands, located
109 miles northwest of Papeete, are verdant, rugged and scenic enough to make
renting a car well worth the expense. The coastal road follows the terrains's
steep contours providing breathtaking views of Bourayne and Maroe bays.
The 4500 residents of Huahine have along tradition of independence and pride in
their Polynesian heritage. According to a Tahitian proverb, "Obstinacy is their
diversion." To this day, their sense of dignity, and perhaps a bit of arrogance
is still manifest. Not surprisingly, you will hear more Tahitian than French.
Huahine is also a magnet for surfers. Although it does not have the type of waves that bring people to Hawaii
or Australia, it does have some of the best and most consistent breaks in French Polynesia.
Most of the islands's accommodations and rich archeological sites are clustered at the north end of Huahine Nui in the Fare and Maeva
area. If you are staying at a Fare accommodation, it's easy to see the old Polynesian temples in the Maeva region on foot or by bicycle.
In June and July you may experience the mara'amu, a trade wind that blows
with tremendous force, bringing downpours and gusts that can wash the sea over
over the road.
