Hong Kong is the gateway to China and one of the world's most thrilling
destinations. Chinese heritage and contemporary culture thrive and combine to
create a truly unique travel adventure.
Hong Kong is a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China, comprising three main sections: the New
Territories, Hong Kong Island and the southern part of the Kowloon Peninsula. Hong Kong covers about 22 square miles, a number that
increases as more and more land is reclaimed from the sea. The region developed rapidly because of its excellent natural harbor
("Hong Kong" means "fragrant harbor").
Early on, the profitable opium trade helped spur its economy; later, it developed as a
British territory under a long-term lease. Today, Hong Kong is one of the world's leading financial,
manufacturing and trade centers.
The region is very densely populated, but the ongoing land-reclamation projects are helping to relieve the congestion.
