45km south of Greymouth and one of the best greenstone sources in
NZ, Hokitika is a small town with a rich history. In the 1860s
the place was abuzz with excitement as people flocked from across NZ to share in the wealth generated by the goldfields.
In those days there were more than 100 hotels and 35000 people to fill the rooms. Now a more sedate atmosphere prevails and the 4000-strong
population live in relative seclusion.
The main attraction here today is greenstone shops, a form of practically indestructible rock that was used by the Maori to make
weapons and ornaments. There are many greenstone shops in the town centre where you can purchase locally carved carvings and sculptures.
Quick tips/suggestions
The West Coast Historical Museum contains an interesting collection of historic gold-mining memorabilia. If you're
feeling slightly
more active there's Westland Water World for all things west, and Glowworm Dell for
checking out some of the more illuminating
locals, heli-rafting and the Takutai Paddle Boat. In addition there are lots of walks - the best long distance one is along
the Alps which takes three to 4 days but offers stunning views in return for your effort. If you're feeling lazy, hire a car to take
in the scenery. Many local lakes and rivers have excellent fishing.
