Hawera is a Waimate Plain farming centre and capital of the South
Taranaki District. The largest one site multi product dairy factory in the world
is located just outside of the town. The Dairyland Visitor Centre features interactive
displays illustration the importance of dairying to Taranaki and it also has a
cafe.
Nearby petrochemical fields provide another source of employment. 23km northwest is the historic battle site of Te Ngutu-O-Te-Manu.
Nearby is the historic Turuturu Mokai pa. The Tawhiti Museum, which also includes
a restored bush railway, preserves the history of the area, while dam dropping
and and Mt Taranaki Adventures both provide adrenalin-rushed activities.
