About 136km north of Christchurch
lies the great rural retreat of Hanmer Springs. This is a veritable wonderland of outdoor activities, ranging from
walks in the exotic Hanmer Forest Park to a dip at Hanmer Springs Thermal Reserve, where the water
can reach 40°C.
The place to bungy jump here is upside-down in the aptly named Thrillseekers Canyon where you plunge from on high towards the raging,
angry river below. Mt. Lyford offers good winter skiing and is a cheaper and more accessible place to break a leg at than most other
South Island resorts.
