Guadeloupe is a French overseas department which includes seven Caribbean
islands, the largest of which is Basse-Terre. French aid has helped to maintain
a reasonable standard of living for the people.
Food is the biggest import, much of it coming from France, while bananas are the
chief export. Despite French aid and thriving tourism unemployment remains high.
