GREYMOUTH
Calling Code: +64 3
101km south-west of Westport, Greymouth is the largest town on the
West Coast. Today coal and timber are Greymouth's
main interest but 130 years ago the town was smitten with gold fever and people arrived from
allover New Zealand and indeed the world in
search of their fortune. The main reminder of this time is the famous Shantytown, a replica of the gold-mining towns of the 1880s.
Now its an interesting stop-off with a real feel of the local history and some cool cafes. It's worth trying the local beer, Monteiths, as the brewery is in the town.
Greymouth is also one of the few places in the South Island that ha a strong Maori presence. Indeed, the town was once the site of a Maori pa.
Quick tips/suggestions
The Grey River is the main attraction here and offers great fishing and rafting. The Gap, which juts into the Grey River, is the best
viewing spot in town. Float through underground streams on a cave rafting adventure, view
Hectors dolphins, cormorant nesting sites and fur seals on an Ocean Boat Tour or
take a horse trek amongst the hauntingly beautiful rain forest. Check out the craft people in their own environment or catch the
wonderful sunsets from the beach or tip-head.
