STATE OF KOSRAE
Calling Code: +691
Because of its profile, Kosrae is called the "Island of the Sleeping
Lady." Legend tells that Kosrae was shaped by the gods from the transformed figure
of a sleeping woman. Her good looks might make you wish to linger, to know her
better. And she won't disappoint.
Particularly if you are coming from the crowded, flat islands of the Marshalls,
you can't help becoming excited by this island's central mountain enshrouded in
dense, gree rainforest, among the most pristine rainforests existing in Micronesia.
In some places, the mountains run directly into the ocean, trapping runnoff soil
and creating their own land fill.
Views are reminiscent of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, or Oahu's windward side 30 years ago. Breadfruit, papaya, mango, taro, coconut palms, bananas, jacaranda and colourful flowers grow everywhere.
Formerly Kusaie, Kosrae (ko-SHRY) is a single 42 sq mile island, the easternmost
of the Carolines and, after Pohnpei, the second largest island in the Federated
States of Micronesia. It fulfills the tropical island fantasy - lush green interior
circled by alternating coral beaches and mysterious mangrove forests. The rugged
interior, inaccessible except with a guide, is crowned by Mt. Finkol (2069ft).
A broad valley between Mt Finkol and Mt Mutunte divides the island in two, with
a deep harbor at each side.
