Postcode: 6100 Calling Code: +61 8

Fremantle is a small, suburb town of Perth, where everyone is friendly and laid back and somewhat alternative. Freo, as the locals call it, is known for it's artsy culture and people - everyone has an opinion and passions rise with the heat and fall with the soft nights.

Don't expect your preppies and button downs in this city - it's definitely one of the more alternative areas of Perth where music and culture abound. br>
Fremantle was established in 1829 as a port for the fledgling Swan River Colony and was the major city in Western Australia for much of its early history; it was the first port of call in Australia for many migrants and visitors and sustains a rich mixture of cultures and nationalities. Today, Fremantle is Western Australia's major commercial port and handles the majority of the State's imports and exports.

Fremantle is a major tourist attraction for travellers from all parts of the world and attracts large numbers of residents and visitors on a daily basis. The city offers a unique blend of a lively multicultural yet relaxed lifestyle and is a 7 day city. During the weekends, the historical Fremantle Markets bring the Cappuccino Strip to life with people. The Strip, as the locals call it, is a street that runs thru the center of Fremantle lined with coffee shops and restaurants. Many an afternoon can be spent watching the people go by...

Along with maritime history and extensive architectural conservation, the Arts have become a central part of Fremantle life where visitors can discover the past and present. br>
Fremantle provides a unique opportunity for the visitor to experience and enjoy a range of cultural activities in a relaxed atmosphere. A browse through the markets or leisurely stop at one of the numerous cafes and restaurants will complement your exploration of the arts, making a visit to Fremantle a rich and rewarding experience.

Thursday's edition of the West Australian has the lowdown on what's going on and offers tips on the hottest places to go.

Quick tips/suggestions
Take your time and relax when you're in Freo. There's tons to do, but this city moves at a leisurely pace. Spend the afternoon at one of the many coffee shops and watch the world go by. Or head down to South Beach and relax by the Indian Ocean.

Best Way to Get Around
In Fremantle you can hop on the big orange buses and get around the city for free. The CAT is great and stops at most key places such as the train station, the Maritime Museum and Notre Dame University. It's a great way to get a tour of the city and not have to pay for it...
