FRASER ISLAND
Calling Code: +61
The world's largest san island, Fraser Island - off the coast of
Queensland - was added to the world heritage list in 1992. The island's vast deposits
of sand apparently provide a continuous record of climatic changes in sea level
over the past 700,000 years. The combination of shifting sand dunes, tropical
rainforests and lakes makes it an exceptional site.
The island is strikingly beautiful - long, uninterrupted white beaches, coloured
sand cliffs, majestic rainforests and crystal-clear lakes. Its dunes reach unbelievable
heights, Fraser is the only place in the world where tall rainforests grow on
sand dunes 200m above sea level.
Low heathlands are covered in wildflowers in spring and summer. Hundreds of bird
species have been recorded here and migratory wading birds rest up during their
annual odyssey from southern Australia to Siberia. The island also has Australia's
purest dingo population. Between August and November, the area becomes a centre
for humpback whale-watching.
You can reach Fraser Island by air or water from Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay,
and 4WD - necessary to get around the island - are for hire. Accommodation ranges
from camping and camper vans to beach houses, luxury apartments and family resorts.
It features numerous
perched lakes and seemingly endless
beaches, where you can encounter
dingoes and the old WWI hospital
shipwreck, Maheno.
