Review of Franz Josef Glacier New Zealand FRANZ JOSEF
Calling Code: +64 3

Named after an Austrian Emperor, Franz Josef was first discovered by the explore Julius von Haast in 1865. The glaciers is 12km long and offers a wide variety of challenging activities. The walk along the Terrace Track is particularly interesting for its glimpses of relics left over from the gold-mining days of the past.

A more strenuous pursuit is a guided tour of the glacier itself. But to get the ultimate perspective on the magnitude of Franz Josef, head for Sentinel Rock which gives a sweeping view over both the Waiho Valley and the mighty glacier.
