The Fox Glacier offers similar activities to Franz
Josef with fewer crowds. The best walk is up to the Welcome Flat
Hot Springs. The Ngai Tahu Track is no longer open, however the
Minnehaha Track makes a good substitute. For stunning views, head
up the wonderfully scenic Chalet Lookout Walk. Keep an eye out
for the beautiful kea (grey-green mountain parrot).
Fox is a cute little town with a couple of good cafes. a bar and a hotel. Nearby is Lake Matheson, with its stunning twin mountain
reflection.
