The Republic of Estonia is the smallest of the three states on the
Baltic Sea, which were formerly part of the Soviet Union, but became independent
in the early 1990s. Estonia consists of a generally flat plain which was covered
by ice-sheets during the Ice Age. The land is strewn with moraine - rocks deposited
by the ice.
The country is dotted with more than 1500 small lakes. Water, including the large
Lake Peipus and the River Narva, makes up much of Estonia's eastern border with
Russia. Estonia has more than 800 islands, which together comprise about a tenth
of the country.
