Review of East Cape New Zealand EAST CAPE
Calling Code: +64 6

This beautiful secluded region has an abundance of wilderness with miles of golden sandy beaches and sparkling lakes and rivers. The coastal trip to Gisborne from Opotiki is a pleasant drive on a fully sealed highway, with spectacular beaches and rugged coastline. Captain James Cook made his first New Zealand landfall here and subsequently renamed many of the bays and features of the area.

Gisborne, the most easterly city of New Zealand, sees the sunrise before any other city in the world. World-class wineries flourish in the climate and the city has many beautiful gardens. The Urewera National Park, accessed through Wairoa and Whakatane, is the place for adventure pursuits including hiking, hunting, fishing, horse trekking and white water rafting. Trampers can travel the Lake Waikaremoana Track, one of New Zealand's Great Walks.

The large East Cape horticultural industry supplies food throughout the Pacific Basin. The third largest grape-growing region in New Zealand, Gisborne has consistently won awards for some of the best wines in the country. Although Gisborne is widely recognized as the Chardonnay Capital of New Zealand, other wines are being successfully produced.

This thriving farming district is one of the most isolated areas in the North Island. The Pacific Coast Highway (Opotiki to Gisborne via East Cape on SH35), although several hours longer than the direct Waioeka Gorge SH 2 is very good driving and has fine scenery. The trip is 334km long with many fine beaches and an excellent climate. Gisborne was the site of the first European landing in New Zealand.

Climate
East Cape is dry and sunny with mild winters. The average summer temperature is 24°C and the average winter temperature is 14.6°C. Gisborne has an average of 2180 hrs of sunshine per year. The annual rainfall is 1050mm.
