It is said to be the first landfall for the legendary Polynesian explorer Kupe and site of landings by early European whales. You can swim, dive, surf, hire kayaks and boats, go sailing, surfcast from rocks or beaches and dig for tuatua, a shellfish. The climate is sub-tropical, the atmosphere peaceful and uncrowded and there is an excellent range of accommodation, cafes and restaurants.
