The Commonwealth of Dominica, a former British colony, became independent
in 1978. The island has a mountainous spine and less than 10% of the land is cultivated.
However, agriculture employs over 60% of the people. The manufacturing of coconut-based
soap is import nat, but much food has to be imported. The future of Dominica depends
a good deal on the development of luxury tourism.
