Review of Curacao Netherland Antilles CURAÇAO
Calling Code: +599

Curaçao, the largest of the Netherland Antilles, offers vacationers an entertaining blend of white-sand beaches, a history-rich capital city, and lovely coral reefs. Whether you're a diver or a landlubber, you can enjoy the latter from the comfort of a semi-submersible boat. Or choose from a wealth of unique experiences: visit the floating market of vessels that arrive daily from Venezuela, Colombia, and other West Indian islands; learn about the island's history during walking tours of Willemstad's historic area; or relaxing on the coral-sand beach of uninhabited Klein Curaao, just off the mainland.

Sometimes, referred to as "the best-kept secret in the Caribbean," the island is surrounded by more than 60 identified dive sites where divers and snorkellers can swim through clouds of fish as they view 57 species of multihued coral. Among the more colorful sponges and rock formations, and Superior Producer, a wreck that has settled 110 feet below the waters surface. Visitors who prefer to laze in the sun will find 38 beaches of varying character fringing the island.

The distinctive cultural and historical value of Willemstad, which has some 750 buildings - mostly townhouses - listed as monuments, led to its placement on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This historic area of the island's capital city has eight forts, dozens of plantation houses, the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Western Hemisphere, and hundreds of small wooden and stone built kunuku houses.

The melting pot of cultures in Curaçao has created a dizzying mix of culinary choices, from Indonesian rijstaffel to foods with local Dutch and Caribbean influences. Discerning gourmets can choose from an array of tastes, from classic to exotic, casual to haute cuisine.

Curaçao's eclectic mix of history, culture, and attractions offers travelers much more than the emblematic sun and beaches of the Caribbean.
