What's it like?
Journey back in time through the military history of the coast at
Fort Macon State Park. Built between 1826 and 1834 to guard the entrance to Beaufort
Harbor, this fort was intermittently garrisoned before being seized by Confederate
troops at the outbreak of the Civil War. The fort was reclaimed by Union soldiers
in an eleven-hour bombardment on April 25, 1862 and was used as a prison during
the Reconstruction Era. Fort Macon was regarrisoned in 1898 for the Spanish-American
War and from 1941-1945 during World War II.
Today the fort stands as one of the first surviving examples of 19th century military architecture and fortification. Areas of the fort have been restored to depict periods of soldier occupation and reenactments of Civil War history are offered during the summer months.
Since 1924, Fort Macon has been one of North Carolina's most visited state parks.
In addition to the fort, the park features an excellent recreation area with lifeguard
protected swimming, a bathhouse, and a picnic area. It is a favorite spot for
fishing, bird-watching, and shelling.
