The Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly known as Zaire, is
the world's 12th largest country.
Much of the country lies within the drainage
basin of the huge River Congo. The river reaches the sea along the country's coastline,
which is 40km (25mi) long. Mountains rise in the east, where the country's borders
run through lakes Tanganyika, Kivu, Edward and Albert. These lakes lie on the
floor of an arm of the Great Rift Valley.
