What's it like?
This is the "alternative" Copenhagen but definitely a must see. We hadn't been in Copenhagen for more than and hour before we made our way to this area.... just hop in any cab and ask for Christiania... they know what you're looking for! It is the only place in the city where it is legal to smoke pot; well, not necessarily legal, but the police do look the other way... we saw several patrol cars outside shooing taxis away... they don't want it to be a tourist spot but it has become one.

The main entrance on Prinsessegade leads straight into the heart of the "city". This is where you'll find most of Christiania's bars, restaurants and nightlife, along with the infamous Pusher street, where lines of stalls sell pre-rolled joints and an international selection of grass wildly popular with tourists in summer. We spent more time here than anywhere else in Copenhagen.... a good thing I don't know, fun definitely....

The "free city" was started in 1971 by youthful squatters in abandoned military barracks. Today, it is now home to about 1000 people - a thriving group of young artists and alterna-thinkers - and several hundred dogs. Once away from the drug vendors, clothes stalls and eco-cafs, the area is seductively rural, with picturesque farmhouses and wooden cabins overlooking the calm waterways of the Stadsgraven.

DON'T TAKE PICTURES ON PUSHER STREET! You will see signs everywhere telling you this and heed the warning. This is a very peaceful area and hard drugs are TOTALLY frowned upon. Pusher Street, aptly named, is the site of all hash and marijuana sales. Remember to exercise caution in this area. Christiania is an open recreation area, which is filled with adventure. Still many of the Freetowns visitors only experience a fraction of the variety of Christiania.
