CHIANG MAI
Calling Code: +66 53
Back in the 1970s, the heyday of the hippies trail, backpackers rolled
into this northern Thai province via train from Bangkok to take in the namesake
capital's slow pace, dust wood and brick shop houses and temples - some 300 of
them, many dating back to the 15th century.
During the 1990s, the moated city's charms were threatened by malls and fast food
outlets. Today, there is a luxe-meets-local fusion in hotels and resorts with
indigenous decor and landscaping.
