The Canary Islands contain seven large islands and many small volcanic islands situated off southern Morocco. The climate is subtropical, being dry at sea level, but wetter on the mountains. Claimed by Portugal in 1341, they were ceded to Spain in 1479. Since 1927, they formed two Spanish provinces.
Tourism is a major occupation. Farming is important as are food and fish processing, and boat building.
