The Republic of Cameroon in West Africa got its name from the Portuguese
word camarões, or prawns; Portuguese explorers fished for prawns
along the coast.
In 1995, partly to placate the English-speaking people, Cameroon became the 52nd
member of the Commonwealth.
Like most countries in tropical Africa, Cameroon's economy is based on agriculture,
which employs almost ¾ of the population. Cameroon is fortunate in having some
oil, the country's chief export.
