The gateway to the tropical far north Queensland, Cairns was a
sleepy little town not so long ago.
While the relaxed nature of the town has been preserved, the place is now a very popular resort town with heaps going
on especially at nighttime. You'll find many cheap restaurants and nightclubs - it can be a great place to party.
The Esplanade is the main hub of activity with street sellers and markets, cafes, restaurants and evening markets. You'll also
find great weekend markets at the Pier and Rusty's Bazaar.
Quick tips/suggestions
There is no beach in Cairns itself, (only the most attractive of
mud flats) but most hostels have pools. To get to the beaches, Ellis and Palm Cove are probably the nicest; take the beach bus
#208 which runs north of the town. You can also swim at Crystal Cascades, inland from Cairns and well worth a day trip.
