BUNDABERG
Calling Code: +61
With a population of 50,000, Bundaberg is the southern gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and is home to the largest
turtle rookery on Australia's mainland. Watch the turtles lay their eggs and the hatchlings scamper down to the ocean. You can do
a turtle tour from November to March.
The locals reckon that although its not a major tourist destination yet, virtually
everything reef-wise that can be done everywhere else can be done
here. The reef access makes for excellent shore diving and courses are available everywhere.
The district is known for its sugar, the area's main crop, and in more recent years fruit growth
which has made it a popular
backpacker fruit picking destination. Bundaberg Rum is Australia's number one selling spirit and has been distilled here since 1888.
The raw material for rum manufacture - molasses - is in abundant supply from the nearby sugar mills.
Quick tips/suggestions
For about $6.50 you can get a guided tour around the Bundaberg Rum distillery where you're shown all aspects of rum production
including molasses storage, clarification, fermentation, distillation, maturation and bottling.
This is a must do - one of the best value tours you will get on the East Coast.
