The Republic of Botswana is a landlocked country which lies in the heart of southern Africa. The majority of the land is flat or gently rolling. The Kalahari, a semi-desert area covers much of Botswana.
Since its independence from Britain in 1966 Botswana has, unlike many other African nations, been a stable multiparty democracy.
