Once a quiet fishing village, Boca Chica now draws international travelers in addition to Santo Domingo's residents eager to escape the city for a weekend. The beach is actually the largest reef-protected lagoon in the Caribbean, and sun-seeking tourists enjoy the tranquil blue waters and powder white sand as much as the local jet set and bronzed beach bums.
A row of restaurants, bars, and cafes flank the nearby main street where one can sip a beer, or eat a hearty seafood dinner while watching the international passersby. Boca Chica is also known as the nightlife capital of the Caribbean.
This resort town is about 10 minutes by car from Santo Domingo airport, and about 25 minutes east of Santo Domingo's western edge.
