History has been and still is being written in the Bundeshaus (Federal Parliament). Long ago, Goethe and
Casanova were captivated by the charm of Switzerland's capital, with its 6km of arcades.
The city's medieval heart was built on a peninsula in the River Aare by the Zähringer duke Berchtold V in 1191, and placed on
UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1983. Albert Einstein lived for a time at
Kramgasse 49, where he developed his Theory of Relativity.
In June 2005, the Zentrum Paul Klee, designed by Renzo Piano, opened as a cultural centre dedicated to Bern's most famous artist.
