ST GEORGES PARISH
Calling Code: +1 441
The Parish as named after Bermuda's original English patron and founder,
Admiral Sir George Somers. Of Bermuda's eight main Islands, two - St. George's
Islands and St. David's Island - fall within the parish. The 703-acre Island of
St. George was the first to be colonized. St David's was enlarged in 1942 to some
650 acres to accommodate Fort Bell, the US Army's military base, which was later
converted to Kindley US Air Force Base. Today it is the Island's International
Airport.
The formidable fortifications, built to protect the Islands as they grew in strategic
importance, still exist to this day. Starting at the Northern tip with Fort St.
Catherine, they include Alexander's Battery, the massive Fort Cunningham on Paget
Island, Fort Popple at Great Head Park, and St. David's Battery. The battery at
Whale Bone Bay covers the western approaches, and Castle Island's ancient guns
still stand guard over Tucker's Town - no doubt a great comfort to the rich and
famous who live on this most exclusive and expensive part of Bermuda. Among those
whose privacy is protected by the 200-year-old guns are Ross Perot and his son
in their lavish side-by-side homes, as well as Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New
York.
