Review of Bay of Islands New Zealand BAY OF ISLANDS
Calling Code: +64 9

The Bay of Islands is the finest maritime park in New Zealand with 144 islands, secluded bays and an abundance of marine life. It is the cradle of European civilization in New Zealand and has fine examples of Maori culture for you to experience.

Paihia is the centre of the Bay of Islands, though only a small town, its population swells dramatically in the summer. The scenery is nothing short of spectacular and can only be fully appreciated by cruising through the area. The area is the warmest part of NZ - temperatures average 16?C in winter and 24?C in summer. The maritime park is a natural wonderland with an abundance of wildlife including marlin, whales, penguins, dolphins, gannets and many other species.

The towns of Paihia and picturesque Russell - a 10 min ferry trip from Paihia - are perfect places to wonder amongst the many shops and restaurants along the waterfront. There are endless activities such as fishing, forest and beach walks, diving (including the historic Rainbow Warrior) and all kinds of other water sports.

Adjoining Paihia is one of New Zealand's most historic sites being the place where both Maori and European joined in the signing the treaty of Waitangi in 1840. The treaty house stands proudly amongst a vast peaceful estate - included is a fully carved Maori meeting house and one of the largest Maori war canoes.

Across from Paihia lies Kerikeri, a laid back provincial town with the word keri meaning to dig. Today it is primarily an agricultural region with oranges, avocados and kiwifruit orchards in abundance. Kerikeri is also home to New Zealand's oldest wooden building, Kemp House, and stone building, Stone Store.

The Bay of Islands gained world recognition in 1927 when American writer Zane Grey came to the area to fish for striped and black marlin and write the famous The Angler's El Dorado. Every summer since, the Bay has seen game-fishing tournaments and glistening catches strung up on the jetties.
