Basel is a multifaceted, cosmopolitan city; in a matter of minutes
the neighboring countries of France and Germany can be reached. The city is home
to Switzerland's oldest university and the largest musical theatre. It also boasts
the world's oldest public art collection; the zoo is known beyond the borders
for its extraordinary variety of species.
Forty museums in only 40sqkm - no other Swiss city has such a concentration of cultural sensations. Museum
buildings by acclaimed architects have endowed the beautifully preserved old city with exciting contrast: to the fore
are the Schaulager (an art storage and exhibition space) by Basel's star architects Herzog and de Meuron, Renzo Piano's
Fondation Beyeler and the Vitra Design Museum by Californian architect Frank O. Gehry.
The cathedral city on the Rhine also boasts Europe's oldest art museum, and Art Basel, a major event in the art world, attracts and
enthralls a huge public every year. The playful Tinguely Fountain and the Museum Tinguely are other landmarks of this congenial city on the Rhine.
