The Azores is a group of nine large and several small islands in the North Atlantic Ocean. Part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the islands are of relatively recent volcanic origin. The Azores have been Portuguese since the mid-15th century and since 1976, they have been governed as three districts of Portugal, which form an autonomous region. Farming and fishing are the main occupation and tourism is growing.
