What were the accommodations like?
Don't get us wrong, this is a nice place... we just won't stay here again. The City Hostel is located
in an old hotel and is by far one of the largest hostels in New Zealand, however, it is also a very quiet one.
Most rooms are doubles with twin beds. There are a few dorm style rooms but they go quickly so make sure to book ahead
if that's what you want. All rooms are single sex only. It only cost NZ$20 a night for the room and yet I was the only one there... kinda makes it
hard to meet people and make new friends. It was great tho for the first night when dealing with jet lag.
When you check in you get a coupon for a free continental breakfast at Tommy's Bistro, the cafe in the lobby. Breakfast
was basic - cornflakes, a glass of oj and toast with jam - not like you can mess it up. They also offer a full breakfast
menu with coffee and tea. The bistro closes around 11:30am.
There is a large, well equipped kitchen on the ground floor and laundry facilities in the basement. They also offer short term
storage. The entire hostel is smoke free although there is a sundeck and smokers area on the 3rd floor. There are two computers with
24 hour internet access at $6/hr and a tv lounge also on the 3rd floor. The facilities are bright and clean and you feel like
you're in a hotel...
There was nothing wrong, per se, with the hostel, we just like a place that has a little more life to it. And a bar.
