What's it like?
Auckland Museum stands in the heart of Auckland Domain on the rim of an ancient volcano. The site is part of the land presented to the government in 1840 by the Maori landowners, Ngati Whatua.

On the outside there are spectacular views of the city and Waitemata Harbour and on the inside the most significant collection of Maori and Pacific treasures in the world. The museum is New Zealand's oldest and is also the war memorial for the Auckland province.

Built as a WWI memorial in 1929, the names of World War II battles were duly added. The contents of Auckland's original city museum were moved here and the holdings expanded. After a major revamp in the late 1990s the museum takes a contemporary approach to its execution with each of the 3 floors taking on an individual identity.

The Maori Natural History Gallery tells the story of New Zealand's unique flora, fauna, and geology and features a 3-story-high kauri tree and huge moa skeletons. The Pacific Lifeways and Masterpieces galleries profile Pacific life and art through everyday and ceremonial items. Special attractions include the Nukuoro goddess figure Kave and the Tikopian sailing canoe.

Auckland Museum's Library houses one of New Zealand's largest collections of heritage material including manuscripts, photographs, paintings and drawings. The Library can be contacted on 90 306 7070, ext 687 and is open Monday to Friday, 1pm-5pm.

Auckland Museum is on the route of the Coast to Coast Walkway, a stop on the Link bus, and regular buses #645 #655 stop on Parnell Road, 5 minutes walk away.

Opening Hours:
10am-5pm daily
except Christmas Day and Anzac morning.
