Name: Bastion Point
City: Auckland New Zealand
Admission: Free

What's it like?
Bastion Point is home the Michael Joseph Savage Memorial, a tribute to New Zealand's first Labour Prime Minister. Credited with establishing the first welfare system ever, Savage was revered in NZ and responsible for some of the most progressive movements in the country to date.

In the late 1970s Bastion Point was the site of a 17-month peaceful protest between police and the Maori traditional owners, the Ngati Whatua, over possession of the land for housing. While the occupiers were finally moved, the stand helped galvanize the land rights movement and a significant change in government.
