What were the accommodations like?
This place is nice. Really nice. You can tell that it is new and it is purpose built. My only problem with it was that
we were on the 5th floor and there was only one elevator - but hey, I need the exercise.
FirstBase Bar is Auckland's big, new backpacker bar and is connected to the dorms on the second floor.
They give you 2 for 1 vouchers upon check in but they are only valid from 5-8pm. No biggie, just means we get drunk
earlier.
We stayed in a double with an ensuite. The bathroom was nice and had a real shower, one that you didn't have to press in every 5
minutes like ACB up the road has. There was also a hair dryer in the room. Nice move Base! Nice.
The bed was quite comfortable and was a double with a single bunk on top. They even gave us towels and a free bar of soap. Backpackers
love free things.
They feature the exclusive
Sanctuary, an upmarket, luxury experience made for single, independent travelling girls. The internet cafe and tv
lounge are on the 2nd floor and a
full service travel agent is on the first. Everyone is issued credit cards to gain access to the rooms and after hours. They are also
deactivated at exactly 10am every morning. It's time to check out and they want you out, no late mornings here.
Overall, Base is definitely my choice for the next time I'm in Auckland. It just blows
the other hostels out of the water.
