Aruba is a flat limestone island, the most western of the Lesser Antilles, some 68km (42mi) west of Curaçao. It was incorporated into the Netherland Antilles in 1845, but in 1977, the people voted in a referendum for autonomy. With Dutch agreement in 1981, Aruba seperated fron the Netherland Antilles in 1986.
