Vienna is breaking away from cultural traditions like Mozart and Lipizzaner stallions. A city of many facets, Vienna has also perfected the .ne art of hanging out, espe-cially in trendy clubs, hip galleries and stylish boutiques. For those who love the after-hours scene, hot new locations are popping up all the time. Lutz Bar avoids tech gadgetry; instead the focus is on cocktails and updated elegance. A Mediterranean menu, a large selection of foreign magazines and a location on Mariahilfer Strasse, near the MuseumsQuartier, add to its appeal.
At the opposite end of the club spectrum, A1 Lounge is white, cool and packed with technical gimmicks. The distinctive faade is a specially designed, seamless
metal surface set within acres of glass.
The articial fog effect inside this double-glazed entrance represents transcendence. Crossing the threshold is certainly a trip. The futuristic A1 Lounge shop (operated by Mobilkom) is on the ground .oor; an equally mod bar complete with a central white monolith is located on the second .oor.
One of Austrias best-known restaurants, the Steirereck, has a spacious new location in the Stadtparks Meierei (dairy). A set menu of six courses, plus matched appetisers, focuses on reinterpreted Viennese classics. The restaurants ess.bar is a bright room with orange glass tiles, Murano chandeliers and a long gilt table where snacks are served. At the adjacent Meierei cheese restaurant, you can sample 150 varieties, spectacularly displayed
in two vast ageing rooms.
Cabaret Renz is one of Viennas oldest entertainment haunts. This former pleasure palace at Zirkusgasse 50, close to the Prater amusement park, is now witnessing a revival as a respectable club. The Open Source artist collective has transformed it with a wide-ranging program of music and arts.
