Adventure tours and things to do
There are more than 25 walks in the Taupo region ranging in length from short 15 minute strolls to 2-hour plus hikes. Adventure seekers wanting to get their thrills and spills have a myriad of adrenalin-pumping activities to choose from; or take the more laid back approach and relax on a beach and get back to nature.

There are tons of things to do in Taupo - here are a few of our suggestions...

Alice Lady of the Lake
Alice is a wood fired, 28ft steam launch built in the 1870s. She is the oldest vessel in the NZ survey and brings to Lake Taupo a most interesting history starting from her early days on the Kaipara Harbour where she was built.
Craters of the Moon
A thermal area of boiling mud and steam vents administered by the Department of Conservation. Situated off SH1 North, Wairakei Tourist Park.
Huka Falls
The major waterfall on the Waikato River. Famous for the volume of water (62,000 gallons per second) that hurtles through its narrow chasm.
Opepe Reserve
This historic reserve was the scene of a massacre of 9 soldiers from the Bay of Plenty Calvary by Te Kooti's men in 1869. A short walk on the left of SH5 leads to the graves. The track on the right leads to the site of the old Opepe settlement to the Armed Constabulary Post's watering trough and to an old saw pit.
Te Tiki O Tamamutu
Carved meeting house carved by master carver Wero between 1800-1810 and moved to its present site in the late 1800s.
The Cutting
An interesting geological feature with pumice stone layers marked and dated. Different colours determine dates of eruptions between 131 AD and 1480BC.
