Review of the history of Southern Lakes
Settled by members of the Free Church of Scotland, Central Otago was founded on sheep, grew on gold, and now depends on farming, stone fruit orchards, wine and tourism for its livelihood.

Gold was the basis for the orginial growth of Central Otago with the rush to Arrowtown and Alexandra, Bannockburn, Clyde, Crowell, Bendigo, Gabriel's Gully, Naseby, Queensotnw and St. Nathans. Many locations are now only names and ruins. The colourful history of these times is perserved in many local museums. The gold rushes brought people from all over the world, inculding many Chinese settlers.
