The southern Solomons became British in 1893, while Germany ceded islands in the
north in 1900. During World War II, Japan occupied the islands, which became the
scene of fierce fighting, notably the battle of Guadalcanal. Known as the British
Solomons, the islands won independence in 1978. Since then the Solomons have faced
many economic problems, while ethnic violence broke out in 1999.
