The following tips for successful platypus viewing have been suggested by National Parks and Wildlife Service...

Best times of the year
During the summer the platypuses are highly active - as this is their mating and breeding season.

Best times of the day
The hour before dusk and an hour after dawn. As Eungella National Park is located about 80km west of Mackay, a stay in the Broken River/Eungella area is recommended to enable the best platypus viewing.

Best Behaviour
  • Approach the water silently and slowly.
  • When you reach the water, stop and pause for one minute - in case the platypus has just surfaced - to make sure you don't startle the creature.
  • Look for tell-tale signs: bubbles, ripples, areas of sediment in the water, where the platypus have been feeding.
  • When the platypus surfaces, it will only stay visible for a moment, as it chews its food before diving for more food.
  • Be ready with the camera.
  • Don't point or shout.
  • On your return from viewing, tell the Park Ranger if one is in sight, so they can keep track of viewing spots.
