Palau was part of the US Trust Territory in the Pacific Ocean, which was established
in 1947.
In 1978 it voted to break away from the Federated States of Micronesia
and a new, self-governing constitution became effective in 1981. The territory
then entered into "free association with the United States," providing sovereign-state
status. However, in 1983, the proposal was rejected in a referendum, because the
US refused to accede to a 92% vote in a 1979 referendum that would have made it
a nuclear-free zone.
On 1 October 1994, Palau finally became and independent republic
and in December 1994 it joined the United Nations.
