Otago New Zealand Wine Country
Central Otago's pioneering gold miners would have been proud of their region's winemaking success - after all, they started it. The region's first vineyards were established by miners who were forced to abandon their claims each summer when the river rose. They established small orchards and vineyards to provide an alternate and probably more reliable income.

Here are the must visit wineries:

Amisfield
Stunning architecture on the edge of Lake Hayes.
Black Ridge
A heroic vineyard, good wines and an eccentric owner.
Carrick
Excellent restaurant with commanding views of Lake Dunstan.
Central Otago Wine Company
Industrial look contract winery that offers a taste of many different producer's wines.
Chard Farm
Worth braving their driveway. Established producer of excellent wines.
Felton Road
Make the pilgrimage - this is truly a cult winery.
Gibbston Valley Wines
This winery has it all and is high on the "must visit" list.
Mt Difficulty
Great views, wines and a decent restaurant high on the hill.
Peregrine
State-of-the-art new winery and tasting room.
Rippon Vineyard and Winery
Central Otago's most photographed vineyard on the shore of Lake Wanaka.
