New Zealand golf courses are up there with the best in the world - the cost of
a round is cheap as chips, courses are set against idyllic backdrops and, the ace in the pack, they're hardly
ever crowded.
A round on a public course costs $20 to $25. Country courses have
green fees - paid into an honesty box - from $15 or less. One or
two club course command hefty fees, but most cost between $25 and
$60.
At last count NZ had more that 140,000 handicap golfers and many
thousands more casual players. But with around 400 courses to choose
from, the country has the highest number of courses per capita in
the worked, at least 30 of them matching Australia's finest.
Given that Scotland is regarded as the home of golf, it's fitting that the tartan city of Dunedin as New Zealand's oldest
golf course at Balmacewan, opened in 1871.
